1st overall, 558th Mount Falernus Unhealthy Liver 5k. 16:02 (5:10 per mile pace) 1 mile warmup, 3 mile race, 3 mile cool down 7 miles on the books --------------------------------- A damn fine race. Results here. Firsts in my life tonight: 1. Broke a tape that was held by people on opposite ends. Nice feeling while doing it in front of the Philly Art Museum in a big race with hulking, metropolitan skyscrapers for background like some Pole Position screenshot. 2. Dropped a guy (who ran a 53:48 at Broad Street) by running a 4:57 opening mile and holding to a 10:07 2nd mile, then death, but the ruse worked. I learned a little bit more about the mental aspects of racing tonight. I'm of the mindset that during a race, if you can put on a bit of a show with your breathing, if you can act as relaxed as possible when someone's right on your heels, you can shake them loose, provided they are struggling themselves. It was a confidence builder; it was happy times and relative comfort; it was enjoyable for the most part and relaxed. I'm really chalking this one up at a PR effort b/c we all know by now that the 15:47 was not a true 5k--barbarian kick or not. I'm ready for VCM. Other good stuff: Joe, one of my friends who I train with, had another PR. He's on that joyful PR learning curve that we've all been on where almost each race leads to a PR, where the bottom isn't in sight yet. It's nice to see progress in people that get it. He did his first Mount Misery repeat session on Thursday. Sub 17 is just around the corner. Around this time last year, my ex-girlfriend, IBM, wouldn't even put our corporate challenge win in their newsletter (see May 20 entry). Last night, my current place of employment won all but 1 category in the race and will surely put us front in center in their monthly publication, where we were when we won the Miami Marathon Corporate race on a company-paid, 4 day trip this past January. -------------------------- This just in from the Evel Karnievel PR machine.... And this... Hoo muthafucking aaah!!! Saving babies yesterday, kicking some SEAL Team ass today. Baby Catalina is safe everyone...she was saved. Thank God! She's safe!!!!

So Karno did 1.5 miles at 6:31 pace, 72 push-ups, and an untold but insufficient number of sit-ups. I may not be able to run for a whole month without sleeping or eat three large pizzas on the fly, but when I was at OBC a decade ago, I did just over 100 push-ups in two minutes, ditto the sit-ups, and two miles on a half-mile track in 9:5X. The only guy who out-pointed me? A former Navy SEAL who had switched branches and gotten recommissioned. (He was in his thirties, so his scoring scale was different from mine -- tehcnically I did better than he did.)

Okay, I didn't have to do pull-ups and swim laps like Dean did, but I was capable of close to 20 pull-ups at the time, not such a stellar feat when you're a skinny guy with no weight to raise. The Army PT test is clearly baised in favor of the wiry -- there were oxen in my platoon who could bench 300 but couldn't do 45 push-ups in two minutes.

The West Point guys told me that the school's max (300 points -- obviously the exntended Ranger scale is invoked when people exceed this) for the PT test was 100, 100 and 10:30 -- is that right, Duncan? At OBC it was only something like 75, 75 and 13:00.

Kevin, yes you got it right. I was good on the situps and the run in college, but the pushups have always been the bane of my existence. We had to do them on 'clicker boards' with instructors standing over you counting while watching your form, saying: "1,2,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,5,5,5,6....40." C-. Next!

Thanks Zeke. Karnivore's contract with North Face(TM) requires him to wear no shirt when he's on earth-saving missions. He's been known to wear a cape from time to time, but that's only when he's doing Karnievel stunts, again, per the North Face(TM) contract. The same contract states that oil must be used for mysterious desert photo ops, memorized Dostoevsky passages must be quoted for 60 minutes interviews,'Indie Rock' must be listened to in the North Face(TM)van, and French Foreign Legion hats with designer sunglasses must be worn at all press conferences. All this is to get the fat customer in EMS to dream about Himalayan backyard adventures and to get him to buy the $200 trail shoes with the Shocker-x(TM)insoles which were designed using XTREME-WAVER(TM) technology and made by the little Thai juvenile in the sweaty building across from the cybercafe.

Congratulations on a great race. I get a lot of advice to run even splits in 5K's, but I think you defined the profile for running a 5K PR. Go out fast and hold on. I have to get up the guts to try that myself this year (only at a much slower pace). BTW. It sounds like the corporate support is much better for you now. I work for your former company and never even heard a word about any participation in the Corporate Challenge. I ran for fun last year as a part of my wife's company's team.

Nice run and nicer strategy, Duncan. It makes racing a lot more fun when you can be that strong. You are definitely ready to tear a foot off in the VCM. Forgive me, but that is kick ass!

Congratulations on a well run race and a PR. Although I've won a variety of small races, I don't think I have ever had the chance to break an official finish line tape.
